There are many fabulous houses in the more affluent parts of Portugal where, perhaps, the owner has died and the family cannot afford to renovate but neither can the property be sold until it’s renovated and so gradually falls into decay until its value is the land only. It is a common site to see a street full of beautiful houses with a derelict in the middle or conversely a row of derelicts with a beautifully restored house in the middle.
